Weifang Bintou Distributed Energy plans on building a new cogeneration plant in Shandong Province in China. The cogeneration plant is designed around a Kawasaki L30A gas turbine generator and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) which will provide both steam and electricity to the region’s factories and households.
The project has been approved by the National Energy Administration as a pilot plant for a newly authorized distribution power grid and is expected to begin operation by mid-2022. As such, it represents a showcase project for Kawasaki Heavy Industries that could be replicated in other provinces.
The cogeneration plant is designed around a Kawasaki natural gas-fired L30A gas turbine genset rated at 32,360kW and 9196 kJ/kWh heat rate (39.2% simple cycle efficiency) at 15°C sea level site conditions, including inlet and outlet losses, equipped with dry low emissions (DLE) combustion for 15 ppm NOx emissions.
China is pursuing energy usage efficiency improvements, which include efforts to accelerate the introduction of renewable energy and distributed energy systems.
To these ends, many organizations are expected to make the switch from traditional coal-fired power generation to more efficient gas-fired gas turbine systems which offer superior environmental performance and better response to fluctuating load demand.
At base load output, the L30A gas turbine has an exhaust mass flow of 324,700 kg/hr at 509°C exit temperature. In cogeneration mode, with unfired HRSG, the L30A plant can deliver up to 50,900 kg/hr of 177°C steam to operate at 80.8% total thermal efficiency.
