GE Vernova and Mass Group Holding (MGH) have signed a deal to modernize Iraq’s largest power plant, the Besmaya power plant, which will include Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades to increase output by 6% and an eight-year service agreement.
This 4.5 GW facility in Baghdad has been undergoing modernization for some time. GE delivered on a phase 1 AGP upgrades of four 9F.04 gas turbines and working on a phase 2 AGP upgrades of another four 9F.04 gas turbines..
These upgrades are being done to improve performance and operational flexibility, enhance efficiency and availability, and boost output , while improving efficiency of fuel consumption and extending lifespan of assets..
Meanwhile, another three GE Vernova 7HA.03 gas turbines will be installed at the Kansai Electric Power Company in Osaka, Japan to replace aging LNG power generation assets (three boilers and three steam turbines), with the goal of increasing power plant efficiency while reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The plant is expected to deliver up to 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to the grid in total and to be the among the most efficient in the country, said Vernova Gas Power Asia’s president and CEO, Ramesh Singaram,
“In addition, 7HA.03 gas turbine technology currently has the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas, with a technology pathway to 100% over the next decade.”
