The year 2024 started well for GE Vernova. The company reported several major gas turbine orders and upgrade projects from all over the globe.
Middle East. The Kuwaiti government announced the completion of Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades for the four 9F.03 turbines in Blocks 2 and 3 at 2 GW Sabiya Combined Cycle Power Plant in Kuwait. This project is expected to increase plant output by 6.3% and reduce heat rate by 1.8%, thus adding 70 MW to previous capacity without requiring more fuel and while lowering emissions.
The upgrades were completed as part of a multiyear service agreement between EPC firm Alghanim International and GE Vernova. Previously, GE Vernova upgraded two gas turbines in Block 1 that added 35 MW of capacity.
Queensland, Australia, CS Energy’s 400 MW Brigalow Peaking Power Plant will be powered by aeroderivative LM2500XPRESS gas turbines which are 95% factory assembled into modules for faster site installation. It is engineered for the many daily starts and stops needed for grids with high penetration of renewable generation.
The machines will be assembled at GE Vernova’s Manufacturing Excellence Center in Veresegyhaz, Hungary. The gas turbines can operate on 35% (by volume) green hydrogen, with a pathway to 100% over this decade. The plant, to be built at CS Energy’s Kogan Clean Energy Hub where green hydrogen will be sourced. is expected to enter commercial operation in 2026.
Mexico: Iberdrola’s 766 MW combined cycle Topolobampo III plant powered by two 7HA.01 gas turbines has commenced operation in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, close to the Topolobampo natural gas pipeline.
These H-class machines are supported by a D650 steam turbine, three H53 generators, Mark* VIe distributed control system (DCS), and two HRSGs supplied by a local GE licensee.
