Mitsubishi Power has completed construction of the eighth and final M701JAC unit for a 5,300MW natural gas-fired combined cycle plant in Thailand. The project, a joint venture between Gulf Energy Development Public Company and Mitsui, began full commercial operation on October 1, 2024.
It marks on-time completion of a multi-phase project awarded in 2018 to build combined cycle (GTCC) facilities in Chonburi and Rayong provinces, key hubs for technological manufacturing and services.

Each plant is powered by four M701JAC gas turbines, steam turbines, and heat recovery steam generators.
As of October 1, the first seven units installed in Chonburi and Rayong had logged 100,000 actual operating hours (AOH). The project’s first phase at the Chonburi power plant was completed in October 2022.
“As our first JAC gas turbine project in Southeast Asia, the GTCC plants in Chonburi and Rayong Provinces set the stage for contracting over 90 JAC gas turbines globally,” said Takao Tsukui, Executive Vice President, Mitsubishi Power, Ltd.
Following completion of the two GTCC power plants, Mitsubishi Power will monitor and supervise their maintenance under a 25-year Long Term Service Agreements (LTSA). The M701JAC gas turbines deliver 64% power generation efficiency, reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions.
Did you know? For the second year in a row, Mitsubishi Power maintained top position of total MW (capacity) sold amongst all OEMs, driven by robust sales of “jumbo” (500MW+) gas turbines. To learn more about who’s selling what, and to identify growth sectors and opportunities in the gas turbine market, please see our 2024 Gas Turbine Market Forecast, which projects sales of industrial gas turbines over 1MW in capacity.
